Matthew Dowell (b.1994, Sunderland, UK) has a research based practice working across the expanded fields of print, performance, and sculpture. He is interested in how we define and occupy a place; responding to specific sites and objects they adopt anthropological models of working through exploring social histories and recording signifiers of place: street and welcome signs, mapping and ephemera. He works with these signifiers as vessels of memory and aides to storytelling.

He studied Fine Art at Kingston School of Art (2013-16) and Print at the Royal College of Art (2018-2020) where he received the Augustus Martin Print Prize. He was shortlisted for the Gillian Dickinson North East Young Sculpture (2019), was the recipient of the Stanley Picker Print Tutorship (2021) and the Gordon Ricketts Research Fund (2021). He has undertaken residencies with Abingdon Studios, Blackpool (2022) and UK News Artists, Leicester (2021/22) and Unit 1 Gallery, London (2021). Recent exhibitions include the Inaugural Football Art Prize at Touchstone, Rochdale (2022), While I Live I’ll Crow at Republic Gallery, Blyth (2022), WEAR HERE for Sunderland Culture (2021), Ride Your Pony.4 at Abingdon Studios, Blackpool (2021) and Radical Residency VI at Unit 1 Gallery Workshop, London (2021).
